Fasting on the day of Ashura

Enter your email address for exclusive updates:

Fasting on the day of Ashura

Allah’s sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…” [al-Tawbah 9:36]

Qutaadah said concerning this phrase (so wrong not yourselves therein…) that wrongdoing during the sacred months is more serious and more sinful that wrongdoing at any other time. Wrongdoing at any time is a serious matter, but Allaah gives more weight to whichever of His commands He will. Allaah has chosen certain ones of His creation. He has chosen from among the angels Messengers and from among mankind Messengers. He chose from among speech the remembrance of Him (dhikr). He chose from among the earth the mosques, from among the months Ramadaan and the sacred months, from among the days Friday and from among the nights Laylat al-Qadr, so venerate that which Allaah has told us to venerate. People of understanding and wisdom venerate the things that Allaah has told us to venerate. (Summarized from the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy on him. Tafseer of Surat al-Tawbah, aayah 36).
Abu Bakrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha’baan.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2958).

Muharram is so called because it is a sacred (muharram) month and to confirm its sanctity.

Significance of Fasting on the day of Ashura
Ibn Abbas (Allaah be pleased with both of them) reported that when Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) came to Medina, he found the Jews observing the fast on the day of ashura. They (the Jews) were asked about it and they said: It is the day on which Allaah granted victory to Moses and (his people) Bani Isra'il over the Pharaoh and we observe fast out of gratitude to Him. Upon this the Prophet of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have, and he commanded to observe fast on this day. (Muslim)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Fasting the day of `Ashura' (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as anexpiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year”(Muslim).

But this forgivness of minor sins comes only if you avoid major sins. It is a big mistake to rely on fasting a single day to “wipe your slate clean.” If you neglect your daily Prayers or the fast of Ramadan, or if you backbite, lie, commit adultery or other major sins, fasting on Ashura alone will not atone for your sins. The great scholar Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyya (b. 691 AH/1292 CE) wrote:

This misguided person does not know that fasting in Ramadan and praying five times a day are much more important than fasting on the Day of Arafah and the Day of Ashura, and that they expiate for the sins between one Ramadan and the next, or between one Friday and the next, so long as one avoids major sins. But they cannot expiate for minor sins unless one also avoids major sins; when the two things are put together, they have the strength to expiate for minor sins.

Among those deceived people may be one who thinks that his good deeds are more than his sins, because he does not pay attention to his bad deeds or check on his sins, but if he does a good deed he remembers it and relies on it.

This is like the one who seeks Allah’s forgiveness with his tongue (that is, by words only), and glorifies Allah by saying “subhan Allah” one hundred times a day, then he backbites about the Muslims and slanders their honor, and speaks all day long about things that are not pleasing to Allah. This person is always thinking about the virtues of his saying “subhan Allah” and saying “la ilaha illa Allah” but he pays no attention to what has been reported concerning those who backbite, tell lies, and slander others, or commit other sins of the tongue. They are completely deceived.

(Al-Mawsu`ah Al-Fiqhiyyah, part 31, Ghuroor)

The Virtue of observing more naafil fasts during Muharram.

Abu Haraira (Allaah be pleased with him) reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. al-muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night. (Bukhari)

Ibn 'Abbas reported that when the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) fasted on the day of 'Ashura and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: Messenger of Allaah, it is a day which the jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th But the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) died before the advent of the next year.(Muslim)

Virtues of the Day of Arafah

Enter your email address for exclusive updates:

Virtues of the Day of 3Arafah

1. It is the day on which the religion was perfected and Allaah’s Favour was completed.
It was reported from 3Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a Jewish man said to him, “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, there is an aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an 3Eed (festival).” 3Umar said, “Which aayah?” He said: (interpretation of the meaning) “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [soorah Al-Maa’idah, v:3]
‘Umar said, “We know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam. It was when he was standing in 3Arafah on a Friday.” (1)
2.  It is a day of 3Eid for the people who are in that place.
The Prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam said: “Yawm 3Arafah (the day of 3Arafah), Yawm al-Nahr (the Day of Sacrifice) and Ayyaam al-Tashreeq (the 3 days following Yawm al-Nahr) are 3Eid (festival) for us, the people of Islaam. These are days of eating and drinking.” (2)
It was reported that 3Umar ibn al-Khattaab said: “It ( i.e., the aayah ‘This day I have perfected…’) was revealed on a Friday, the Day of 3Arafah, both of which – praise be to Allaah – are 3Eids for us.”
3.  It is a day by which Allaah swore an oath.
The Almighty cannot swear by anything except that which is mighty. Yawm 3Arafah is the “witnessed day” mentioned in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):
“By the witnessing day [Friday] and by the witnessed day [the Day of ‘Arafaah].” [soorah Al-Burooj, v:3].
It was reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam said: “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of ‘Arafaah, and the witnessing day is Friday.” (3)
It is the “odd” [i.e., odd-numbered, Witr] by which Allaah swore in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “And by the even and the odd” [soorah Al-Fajr, v:3].
Ibn 3Abbaas said: “The even is the Day of al-Adhaa [i.e., 10th Dhul-Hijjah] and the odd is the Day of 3Arafah [i.e., 9th Dhul-Hijjah]. This is also the view of 3Ikrimah and al-Dahhaak.
4.  Fasting on this day is an expiation for two years.
It was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam was asked about fasting on the Day of 3Arafah. He said, “It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” (4)
This (fasting) is mustahabb for those who are not on Hajj. In the case of the one who is on Hajj, it is not Sunnah for him to fast on the Day of 3Arafaah, because the Prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam did not fast on this day in 3Arafah.
It was narrated that he forbade fasting on the Day of 3Arafah in 3Arafah.
5.  It is the day on which Allaah took the covenant from the progeny of Adam.
It was reported that Ibn 3Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam said: “Allaah took the covenant from the loins of Adam in Na’maan, i.e., 3Arafah. He brought forth from his loins all his offspring and spread them before Him, then He addressed them, and said: ‘Am I not your Lord? They said, ‘Yes, we testify,’ let you should say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Verily, we have been unaware of this.’ Or lest you should say: ‘It was only our fathers aforetime who took others as partners in worship along with Allaah, and we were (merely their) descendents after them; will You then destroy us because of the deeds of men who practised Al-Baatil (i.e., ploytheism and committing crimes and sins, invoking and worshipping others besides Allaah)?’ [soorah Al-A3raaf, v:172-173].” (5)
And there is no greater day than this and no greater covenant than this.
6.  It is the day of forgiveness of sins, freedom from the Fire and pride in the people who are there:
It was narrated from 3Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam said:“There is no day on which Allaah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of  3Arafah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, ‘What do these people want?’” (6)
It was reported from Ibn 3Umar that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam said: “Allaah expresses His pride to His angels at the time of ‘Ishaa’ on the Day of 3Arafah, about the people of 3Arafaah. He says, ‘Look at My slaves who have come unkempt and dusty.’” (7)
“As for you staying till the evening in 3Arafah, then Allaah descends to the sky of the Duniya and He boasts about you to the Angels, and says: ‘My slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth My slaves! Having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.’” (8)
And Allaah knows best.

Give yourself the Gift of Giving

Habibi Halaqas has now been running for a little over a year and in this time, it has grown by leaps and bounds, alhumdulillah. It started off with an audience of about 20 sisters and now the average attendance of the halaqas is around 250 sisters, alhumdulillahi rabbil 'alameen. Also, Habibi Halaqas facebook page consists of almost 7000 sisters, ma sha Allahtabarak Allah. I attribute this success to none other than Allah subhaana wa ta'aala, who in His utmost kindness and mercy allowed me and all the sisters involved with Habibi Halaqas to help so many sisters around the world and we ask Him to accept it from us, ameen

Posted below are feedbacks that I have received from sisters over the past year:

I just finished watching the Fiqh of Menstruation Webinar and Alhumdulillah I found it extremely helpful. I had so many uncertainties about this issue and this webinar has cleared all of them Alhumdulillah. I especaially took home the imporatnt message of not being ashamed to ask questions we may have about our deen especially in sensitive areas of discussion. I just wanted to let you know what a great job you are doing and I support you 100%! I am looking forward to your next webinar about marriage and being happy. May Allah reward you for your continued efforts InshAllah

Jazak Allah  khair  sister for a fantastic webinar on a much needed  topic. Subhan Allah this was the answer to my dua, i have been chasing after this seminar all whole the net ever since i first held of it.  Finally i was able to benefit from, even though i missed the beginning coz being in uae it was in the middle of the night for us. Al hamdo lillah, it was worth it.

mashallah, very informative webinar. i really enjoyed listening to it, and appreciate my husband even more now:-) i think the advice overall was very practical, and one of the best highlights was the questions to ask a prospective husband. because most sisters get that part wrong and have no clue what to ask!...also good reminders to those who are married to keep the fun going:-) jazakallah to the habibi halaqa team for making this available to us.

Here are some messages I received from sisters who started wearing the hijab after our hijab webinar, alhumdulillahi rabbil 'alameen!

Salaam alaykum to all sisters @ Habibi Halaqas... Thank you to your halaqa it helped me so much to build courage and start using hijab. Last Saturday was my first time using hijab fulltime. Jazaka'Allah khayr.

Salam sisters. I proud to say that your lecture gave me the final push I was seeking and with the help of Allah swt I donned the hijab (or khimar I should say, now knowing the difference from the lecture) yesterday:)))).  I feel elated and enveloped in Allahs swt love and mercy, truely only he can guide us. Nevertheless I have thanked him loads and inshalah will continue to do o, but I would like to thank you for your efforts in producing the lecture, you have already helped one sister in islam.

The reason I am sharing this with you is to request you to support us in our endeavors and gain ajr through Habibi Halaqas. Allah has truly put barakah in this project, alhumdulillahi rabbil 'alameen, and I wish for all of you to be a part of this.

Please donate to Habibi Halaqas so sisters around the world can continue to benefit from it, in sha Allah. Your donation will help keep Habibi Halaqas running more smoothly and allow us to improve our halaqas and our website even more, in sha AllahPlease donate anything you can, no matter how small the amount may be. I praise Allah and ask Him to increase you in your blessings and reward you with the best of rewards in the hereafter.

Please email us at habibihalaqas@gmail.com if you would like to send in a cheque instead. Jazzak Allah khair.

Ibn Al Mubarak would only give his charity to people of knowledge. He was asked, 'why do you not broaden (your charity to other people)?' So he responded, 'I do not know any station, after the station of prophethood, that is more noble than the station of the scholars. So if one of them is restrained by (not being able to) provide for himself, then he will not have any time for knowledge, nor will he teach others. So to provide them time to study and teach is better (than giving it to others).'
